How to find out if you have a boy or girl hamster

If you can get a closer look at your hamster, if you see just one "vent" or opening which is usually actually two openings so close together they look like one, then you have a girl hamster. If it looks like two separate holes spaced apart, you have a boy hamster.

On the topic of male hamsters, the following pictures all show a healthy male syrian hamster's bottom. They change a lot due to how warm the hamster is. In the summer it's probably more noticable that you have a boy hamster!







For small, fast or unhandable hamsters, coax them into a hamster exercise ball or clear plastic traveling container. Make sure they're securely inside with the lid on and carefully lift above your head. You should be able to get a good view of their vents without having to hold a squirmy hamster.
